Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Monday Ubani, has reiterated his support for the establishment of State Police in Nigeria, describing it as the most effective solution to the country's over-centralised policing structure. Speaking during an interview on Arise News following the passage of the State Police Bill by the National Assembly, Ubani explained that Nigeria's current security realities require a policing system that is closer to the people and better equipped to respond to local challenges. According to him, the nation's centralised policing framework has struggled to effectively address the diverse security threats facing different parts of the country. He argued that empowering states to establish and manage their own police services would strengthen intelligence gathering, improve response time, and enhance community policing. Ubani further noted that the passage of the State Police Bill represents a significant step toward deepening Nigeria's federal system, allowing states to take greater responsibility for maintaining law and order while complementing the role of federal security agencies. The respected legal practitioner maintained that state policing is consistent with the principles of true federalism and would provide a more practical and sustainable approach to tackling insecurity across the federation. The passage of the bill by the National Assembly marks a historic milestone in Nigeria's ongoing constitutional and security reforms. If eventually assented to and implemented, the legislation is expected to fundamentally reshape the country's internal security architecture. Watch the full interview below.
